Trudeau’s political suicide?
Canadians may not hold Justin Trudeau accountable but Kevin O’Leary might!
Only in Canada will such gross political incompetence go unchallenged. The present Liberal government dances from one lie, one broken promise, to another. There is zero response, zero outrage. Our illustrious Prime Minister promised electoral reform in the 2015 election and now after a perfunctory and designed to fail effort the government just walks away from it.
It is noteworthy there is no protest in the Liberal party caucus. No faction of the dilapidated Liberal Party has the guts to defend democracy and insist this government start keeping its promises. The caucus really is a bunch of bench-warming, “free lunch” neoliberals, more concerned with retaining their cushy comforts than doing their job as alleged progressive Parliamentarians.
The prime minister has failed to effectively manage even the time-worn trickery of the Liberal Party. This is to campaign left and govern right, and secondly, to discard campaign promises like yesterday’s dead fish.
He all too quickly revealed his government was nothing more than a Harper clone. He did nothing to distance his administration from Harper’s regime. Many more Canadians realized once and for all these two parties are actually one. We do indeed live in a single party state. Nor does he realize campaign promises have to be discarded with some discretion. Timing is everything in politics. He has backed away from too many issues too quickly, thus revealing his government as a bunch of weak-kneed freeloaders, lacking vision and integrity.
This government flatters itself cruising to a sweeping majority over the Harper Conservatives. Elections are very much a voter rejection of the incumbent party. Liberals won the 2015 election more by default than on merit. Our archaic first past the post (FPTP) electoral system, national disgrace that it is, diminishes the actual legitimacy of their mandate. This government does not realize its own political vulnerabilities and just how tenuous its hold on power is. The Conservatives are ideally positioned to blow this government out of the water in the 2019 election. By its present performance it is paving the way for a Conservative victory. It never occurs to these neoliberal nabobs of nullity that some good solid progressive legislation is the best way to insure a second term.
There is a “shark” stalking this government. He smells easy pickings and it is none other than Conservative leadership candidate Kevin O’leary. He has called the PM a “weak” leader and speculates he may not even last his first term.
O’Leary may well thrash Trudeau’s weak-kneed Liberals. Like Trudeau before him he arrives on the political scene with very high name recognition, and supported by an archaic electoral system that favors political gadflies with shallow credentials.
One hundred and fifty years after Confederation we are still without electoral reform. Come election day 2019 Canadians are going to remember the party that promised electoral reform and just couldn’t be bothered delivering it. Trudeau will be immortalized as the hapless naïf who killed it.
