Trudeau, Morneau: The pursed lip boys
Canada’s deformation party gets caught red-handed
Pursed lips can mean many things. They can mean anger, frustration, or an imminent melt down. They can also mean caught “red-handed” as in being trying to pull off a “fast one” or being caught with your pants down . Take your choice.
This is just what happened to Messrs Trudeau and Morneau when they faced a barrage of questions and accusations from the Opposition benches. They were left speechless.
It doesn’t matter whether it is the TPP -11, NAFTA or Minister Morneau’s outrageous conflict of interest on pension reform this prime minister is immune to discussing substance on any issue. To deal with substance is to honestly debate the pros and cons of an issue-to get at its truth. This though is not the business of this government. It’s agenda is to deceive Canadians; just as they call themselves Liberals, they are really neoliberals.
Pursed lips might also signal being ethically challenged. Silence can be considered consent. By his silence the PM condones Mr. Morneau’s unethical behavior and tars himself. By his silence Mr. Morneau either doesn’t understand the depth of his unethical behavior and is unwilling to show contrition if he does.
As NDP MP Nathan Cullen stated in the House:“Talking about things like ethics is important because the public has a lot of reasons to suspect that politicians and even people act this way to benefit themselves: they don’t tell the whole truth, break promises, which makes it harder and harder for Canadians to believe who they sent to office. We need to as it is an incredibly important relationship and incredibly important to what happens in this country.”
Cullen makes a very profound point as too many Canadians are shaking our heads and asking,”Who did we send to office?”
Just as this government vainly resorts to virtue signaling; its lack of virtue oozes out of every pore. Its ethical bankruptcy shames Parliament and is in contempt of it.
It is a sad comment on this government the ethics commissioner has to take such a high public profile playing den mother to the bad boys of Parliament Hill.
Then of course we must remind ourselves this is not a government; but a catering service, a neoliberal catering service. The Liberal party needs to be re-branded as the Caught Red-handed Neoliberal Catering Service. There really should be some honesty in advertising and deliverology.
Neoliberalism is the defining economic paradigm of our time-it refers to the politics and processes whereby a relative handful of private interests are permitted to control as much as possible of social life in order to maximize their personal profit.
