Trudeau and Clark: A Neo-liberal Affair
“The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore”
PM Justin Trudeau and BC Premier Christy Clark are having a love affair. It does not involve any black leather apparel, secret rendezvous, or red-eye flights between Victoria and Ottawa. It is not a love affair you would read about in a dime store novel. This is hardcore non-fiction. It is about the state of affairs, the affairs of state and falling in love with an ideology. The affair though, is illicit, because they both operate under the Liberal banner, but have become devoted Neo-liberals.
We don’t know how much time they actually spend together but it appears they are both reading from the Neo-liberal song book.
The public, like parents everywhere, are too often the last to learn of these shenanigans. We think they are behaving themselves, but like the “Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore,” they are off frolicking and having a good time. We would like to think they have been instilled with good values, but low and behold they become closet Neo-liberals, and they are ever so shy about owning up to their Neo-liberal affair, which no parent, and no public should tolerate.
To allow Neo-liberalism is to play with fire and again we must defer to another childhood classic, and that is non-other than “Old Mcdonald had a Farm.” The emphasis being on “had” as if we allow the children of Neo-liberalism to frolic at the beach much longer McDonald’s Farm/our world, is going to be badly burned.
I write this as an ageing and somewhat cranky septuagenarian. My children are about as old as the above mentioned. My grandchildren are growing up all too fast. I have vivid recollections of the present prime minister’s father as I was then in my middle years. He was a true Liberal. I can say without equivocation this was a different world and better world. Be assured this is not some misplaced nostalgia for the past. Alarming social indicators bear the proof.
What a difference a mere thirty odd years make!
Yes, I am pre-Neo-liberal and live on to tell about it. It has rushed into existence like a speeding freight train driven by greed and political complicity. That train is eventually going off the tracks because nobody is around to put on the brakes. The merchants of greed and warfare are getting to do exactly what they want to do.
We are mesmerized by our neighbor to the south as we cower in its shadow. Their present is our near-future as we so uncritically and obligingly follow their lead. We are seeing a big family fight in a nation that has allowed its democracy to decay, and be dominated by a malignant ideology so omnipresent, yet unrecognized.
The pain of old age is not a decaying body and a less than reliable mind. It is to see younger generations, especially those who claim to lead, accepting a status quo that only a few decades ago would have been deemed reprehensible.
I only mention all this in passing as when politicians fall in love with Neo-liberalism, an ongoing epidemic, it should be of public concern. We get to pick up the tab. We end up being “had.” All of a sudden “had” becomes a very big three letter word.
