Declare your home an enclave of Cascadia. We have!
Peace, harmony and freedom for all
Many British Columbians may not be aware our province is part of a larger region known as Cascadia, named after the Cascade mountains. They run from the Yukon, through BC, and into Washington and Oregon states. Cascadia also refers to the Pacific Northwest. It embodies a distinct ecosystem that quite logically could be a viable sovereign state. There is a movement ongoing to actualize this as a sovereign state by erasing the 49th parallel, as the international border that divides it.
Our First Nations were custodians of Cascadia for thousands of years before they were forced to give it up to British and American imperialists who arbitrarily carved it up without any regard for its natural borders.
They yielded the territory to the new custodians, handing it over in pristine condition. Great cities have been build, modernity prevails, and the imprint of industrialization is everywhere. Its present population is about 16 million people.
Cascadia remains one of the greatest, most gifted, and majestic places in the world to live. It is a great legacy handed to us, not as owners but as custodians.
We have reached a tipping point where politicos in Ottawa and Victoria are no longer worthy custodians. They have betrayed the spirit and legacy of Cascadia. With the approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the site C Dam they have shown themselves wantonly irresponsible.
Every new pipeline condemns another generation to the curse of fossil fuels and pumps thousands of tons of toxicity into the atmosphere. We prevaricate at a time when the end of oil is imminent and we should be vigorously developing alternatives.
Mega dams like Site C are the dinosaurs of the past when we have the technology to produce power efficiently on a much smaller scale.
Being married to pipelines and mega dams in the present world, as our politicos are, constitutes an egregious corruption. They collude with the profiteering Philistines indifferent to the wreckage they leave in their wake.
Cascadia is a virtual state, a movement, a value system that respects the environment. It is about ethical custodianship. It repudiates serving vested interests who think making buckets of money is the way of the world and the road to salvation.
The heavy bitumen from which the oil is extracted is in itself enivronmental degradation. Huge quantities of water and energy are needed to extract oil from the bitumen and one of the biggest problems with this is the huge tailings ponds, a byproduct of the process. Presently these cover about 30 square miles in Alberta. The Mildred Lake tailings pond is formed by the largest earth-formed dam in the world and will be followed by others. Tar sands oil is extremely vulnerable to price fluctuations because of its high production costs. The hidden costs of environmental degradation resulting from its production defy calculation, and in any case will be conveniently forgotten with time.
The spirit of Cascadia is about progressiveness, building a better future and not being slaves to the present or past. It is about starving the tyrannies that haunt us, not feeding them as we are now. It is about leaders actually leading and populations holding them to account. Silence is no longer affordable.
We have declared our modest property in the Fraser Valley an enclave of Cascadia. We will fly the flag, wear the bumper sticker (Available at Amazon.ca) and pursue the spirit with religious devotion. In doing so we make a commitment to a grand legacy not being looted. Politicians in Victoria and Ottawa are no longer worthy custodians acting on our behalf. Becoming a Cascadian is a vote of non-confidence.
Become Cascadian by declaring your property an enclave of Cascadia. As more and more people join it becomes a wave spreading across maps; an emerging force for progressive change.
Once you make this important decision, publicize it. Post it on the social media, talk to friends, write your MP and MLA. Send letters to the editor. Explain why you have adopted this dual citizenship.
Non-residents of British Columbia declare yourselves honorary Cascadians.
Cascadians in Washington and Oregon please join us.
Our First Nations peoples are the original Cascadians. We must join with them in what is a profound historic reconciliation, moving forward into a modernity that does not deal in wreck and ruin; but peace, harmony and freedom for all.
